Data expressed in kilotons (kt). Data source statista.com
This report is provided directly by Zalando in their Sustainability Progress Report 2021 from which these were extracted data on greenhouse gas emissions from Zalando which include all greenhouse gases regulated by the United Nations Kyoto Protocol:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
- Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
- Perfluorocarbons (PFC)
Reading the full report highlights it Zalando's commitment to improve its sustainability, but the company's growth is so large that all the measures taken to reduce its CO2 emissions (and more generally its environmental impact) seem not to be so effective, in fact, CO2 emissions are constantly increasing year after year. year.
The "indirect emissions" are by far the most consistent in terms of kilotons of Co2 emitted and include their suppliers (manufacturers, couriers, etc.) over which Zalando does not have "direct control", but over which - again according to their report- they are working: “As part of our do.MORE strategy we are calling on our key partners, who account for 90% of our emissions from products sold, packaging and last mile deliveries, to establish SBTs by 2025."
“Direct emissions” are also growing, with a peak in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic situation. Despite having long since given up on non-renewable energy sources and having undertaken actions such as installing photovoltaic panels in various locations, using biogas and electric heat pumps, and other “concrete” actions aimed at reducing their emissions: “as our business grows, so do our emissions".
We therefore have no choice but to wait until the end of 2022 to analyze the new data and see if this commitment will translate “at least” into a growth in CO2 emissions of less than 18% compared to 2022.
In the meantime, if you really have to buy on Zalando, do it "sustainably" reading our article.
