What is the Fashion Pact?
Il Fashion Pact is an agreement between major fashion brands signed on the occasion of the G7 in Biarritz in France, which brands are committed to a more sustainable production by working on 3 common objectives:
- Pay attention to Climate Change
- Preserve Biodiversity
- Safeguarding the Oceans
The motto of the Fashion Pact è "First steps to transform our industry" (fashion), a devastating sector for our ecosystem, which we remember as the second most polluting industry in the world.
THEenvironmental impact of the textile industry has been in the spotlight for over 20 years, but with the rapid spread of fast fashion the environmental problem has increased dramatically and is now completely out of control.
Il Fashion Pact is a step forward and we hope that it will be respected by all those who sign the agreement, even if we cannot consider it as "the definitive solution": to talk about sustainable fashion these 3 objectives are not in fact sufficient and the sustainable development of the textile industry requires other commitments.

Fashion Pact press release
Below is the official press release released on 12 October 2020 by the Fashion Pact.
Fashion Pact: first steps towards the transformation of the sector
- For the first time in the fashion industry, the Fashion Pact brings together the CEOs of over 60 world-leading fashion and textile companies. Representatives of the fashion, sport, lifestyle and luxury sectors, together with suppliers and retailers, are committed to achieving a series of ambitious and well-defined shared environmental objectives, focused on three main areas: climate, biodiversity and oceans.
- Coalition members identified seven concrete and strategic objectives covering three main areas, with the support of some of the best technical experts. They focused in particular on untapped opportunities, for which collaborative action is needed to find solutions and achieve important results globally.
- One year after its creation, the number of members of the Fashion Pact has doubled; the signatory companies are currently more than 60 and come from different sectors and 14 countries. The companies of the Fashion Pact today represent over 200 brands and 1/3 of the fashion industry. This degree of diversity and richness is critical to ensuring a long-term impact in the supply chain.
- The Fashion Pact is still at the beginning of its work. The coalition has taken the first steps. First of all, an operational structure was established by developing a digital dashboard of KPIs to measure the joint impact and start a first collaborative activity on biodiversity, relying on the technical expertise of industry experts.
Last year the Fashion Pact was inaugurated and presented to heads of state at the G7 summit in Biarritz. 32 groups and brands from the luxury, fashion, sports and lifestyle sectors have joined this new industry coalition and have decided to act collectively to transform the sector and continue on the same path as existing initiatives, and even go further.
Since its inception, the Fashion Pact has been organized as a coalition of CEOs. The guide is entrusted to a Steering Committee made up of 14 rotating members and flanked by an Operational Committee made up of 23 managers and a Task Force.
The signatory companies have defined seven concrete objectives focused on climate, biodiversity and oceans and are supported by the best experts in the fields of research, science and conservation.
To measure progress and carry out its actions, the pact defined a digital dashboard of KPIs, based on its three pillars and developed thanks to the strategic consultancy of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
Commitment to the Climate
The signatory members of the Fashion Pact committed to climate science based targets (SBTs) in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050:
- implement the principles of the UN charter for the sustainability of fashion;
- obtain a supply of 25% low environmental impact raw materials by 2025;
- reach 50% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
To achieve these goals, the Fashion Pact collaborates with leading industry climate experts, starting with 2050 and SYSTEMIQ, who have identified strategic areas in which to make collective efforts without duplicating existing initiatives, in order to inform and assist companies in decision-making processes, preparation of accurate reports and definition of objectives.
Most companies are already carrying out important individual initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the result is that together the signatories have reduced GHG emissions by ~ 350-450.000 tons (CO2 equivalent) in Scope 1 and 2. I members have also made significant progress in the transition to sourcing environmentally friendly raw materials, reaching ~ 40% for cotton for example.
Finally, 1/3 of the signatories are on track to reach 50% renewable energy in 2020.
Commitment to Biodiversity
Attention to biodiversity is slowly emerging in the fashion world, despite being a crucial issue for companies that use natural resources. Regarding this pillar, the Fashion Pact he is concretely committed to the safeguarding of endangered species and to the protection and reconstruction of habitats at risk.
Basing its action on science and technical know-how, the Fashion Pact has partnered with Conservation International to achieve three main goals. The first is the elaboration of a detailed action plan for individual and collective action over the next two years.
The second goal is to establish a collaboration with leading global experts and institutions to support the technical side. Finally, the third focus is supporting research to support scientific analyzes and approaches that will help shape biodiversity outcomes.
To kick off the first actions, the Fashion Pact organized "Nature of Fashion", a series of webinars for which members worked together with leading nature conservation experts on various topics, such as supply chain mapping for biodiversity, the creation of the Science Based Targets for Nature and the development of biodiversity strategies.
The first concrete objectives that the members of the Fashion Pact have set are the following:
- the development of individual biodiversity projects by the end of 2020;
- support for zero deforestation and sustainable forest management by 2025.
80% of the signatory companies had never made a commitment to biodiversity before joining Fashion Pact and 50% of them said that joining the pact encouraged their organizations to develop actions or commitments to stop deforestation.
Commitment to the Oceans
As for the pillar of the oceans, the first goal of the Fashion Pact is the elimination of all superfluous plastic and a source of pollution present in packaging (such as that of plastic bags, hangers, packs and bags).
Members undertake to:
- complete the elimination of plastic in B2C packaging by 2025 and in B2B packaging by 2030;
- ensure that at least half of B100C packaging is made from 2% recycled plastic by 2025 and at least half of B2B packaging by 2030.
These actions were chosen because the Fashion Pact wants to have a concrete impact and these objectives will require ever greater innovation and companies that pursue a successful model. In these fields, the coalition is the only one with the tools it needs to use its influence and accelerate impact.
The success rate of individual companies is not always uniform: for example, 60% of the coalition brands managed to eliminate plastic from bags, while it was more complicated with regards to hangers and B2B transport bags, for which only 15% of the members managed to eliminate plastic.
While progress is uneven, collective action can push for more innovation to bridge these gaps.
Il Fashion Pact is currently working with (RE) SET to engage innovators to take action and to use collective influence to augment innovative solutions.
