Environmental impact of detergents

The environmental impact of laundry detergents and household cleaners is devastating for our planet, so we always recommend using ecological detergents.

One of the most frequently asked questions, with reference to washing clothes, concerns itself like machine wash doing as little damage to the environment as possible.

How to wash in the washing machine

Perhaps not everyone knows, in fact, that traditional detergents contain various toxic substances, which cause serious damage to the ecosystem. For this reason, wearing a suit in cotton, wool or synthetic fiber, benefiting from a fresh and comfortable sensation of perfume and clean, can also derive from a conscious washing, which respects the composition of the different fabrics but, at the same time, has a minimum impact on the environment.

The two main elements that have the greatest influence on the quality of washing are water and detergent.

Using less water is part of a healthy civic sense, which concerns not only the machine wash, but also the one by hand. As far as possible, it is advisable to prefer ecological detergents, which have a high degreasing power and are produced with a lower percentage of pollutants; moreover, the quantity of detergent should also be reduced, both because the garments are not soiled as a few decades ago, and because modern washing machines have very effective washing cycles, even at low temperatures.

By favoring programs with a maximum of 30 or 40 degrees it is possible to obtain excellent results.

The latest generation washing machines are programmed to work with a reduced energy expenditure, optimize the washing cycles, widely customizable in the duration and quantity of water used, and ensure the suitable treatment of garments with delicate fibers, such as silk and wool.

Maintenance of ecological fabrics

By using the washing machine and detergent intelligently, you can achieve perfect results, a clean and fragrant laundry, with the peace of mind that you have done your best not to negatively affect the environment.

An equally important factor concerns the respect of the fibers of which the garments are made: by adequately differentiating the fabrics and treating them with the correct water temperature and a suitable detergent, they can be kept beautiful over time, without giving way or getting damaged.

How to wash cotton in the washing machine

Cotton (as well as organic cotton) is a natural fiber, from which garments and fabrics commonly used in daily life are produced, including sheets, towels, tablecloths and decorative cloths.

Cotton is one of the oldest materials in the world and its most appreciable characteristics concern its high transpiration power, ideal for maintaining a constant body temperature, freshness to the touch and resistance to use and time. Furthermore, the cotton fiber is hypoallergenic and lends itself to any type of processing and treatment, it does not felts and is able to absorb sweat and liquids in general.

Before you understand like washing cotton in the washing machine correctly, it is necessary to carefully read the label placed on each garment or fabric, both in the case of washing by hand and in the washing machine. We will illustrate the modalWashing in the washing machine, the one that could create more than one problem, if some precautions are not observed.

White cotton items, such as sheets, towels and towels, can be machine washed in the same cycle, if there are no garments whose label recommends hand washing.

In modern washing machines, programs dedicated to cotton include a long cycle at 60 degrees and others at 30 or 40, with varying durations, from 30 to 90 minutes. For whites, not very dirty and without stubborn stains, the ideal program is at 40 degrees, using ecological detergent in the quantity indicated on the package, based on the capacity of the washing machine, considering a full load.

The detergent can be both powder and liquid, although the latter, if applied directly into the drum together with the garments, guarantees less wear on the fabric and excellent results. Instead of the softener, pour a little white vinegar into the tray dedicated to the final treatments; the laundry will be fresh, clean and super soft, ready to be folded, worn or ironed.

As for colored garments, it is possible to apply the same rule, with the additional precaution of washing in the same load those garments with stable colors and which have already been washed, without causing loss of pigment and stains that are difficult to manage.

How to wash hemp in the washing machine

La hemp it is a natural fiber, used to make clothes, furnishing accessories and other objects of common use. The most appreciated characteristics of the fabric obtained with hemp concern the remarkable resistance to use and time, which indeed increases its softness.

To wash hemp properly, it is advisable to follow a few simple rules, to avoid damaging a highly reliable fabric that promotes skin transpiration, as it is able to absorb liquids.

How to wash hemp in the washing machine, respecting the fibers without forgetting the environmental impact? A necessary premise concerns the fact that, to wash hemp and keep its properties unaltered, it is recommended, as far as possible, to wash it by hand, because the washing machine risks damaging its fibers.

For the same reason, it is highly not recommended to use the dryer, favoring exposure to the open air or, if this is not possible, indoors with sufficient ventilation. Hemp, in fact, if placed in humid environments, tends to produce a not very pleasant smell, which could remain on the fabric for a long time, even after repeated treatments.

The first step is to read the label inside the garments, to identify those that, if necessary, need to be washed separately or special precautions.

In the event that it is strictly necessary machine wash, it is advisable to choose a program at 30 degrees, with a not very powerful spin or, if possible, eliminating it altogether.

Also in this case, the detergent must be as ecological and delicate as possible, with a foam production reduced to a minimum. To preserve very delicate items, a suggestion is to put them in the special linen-saving netted bags, before putting them in the washing machine.

How to wash wool in the washing machine

Wool, as well as organic wool, it is a natural fiber that comes from the animal world; the one considered the most valuable is cashmere, originally from Tibetan goats, very soft and warm.

To understand like washing wool in the washing machine in an effective way and without damaging it, it is advisable to follow a series of recommendations, specific for this type of yarn, which is extremely delicate and has a tendency to fel easily if treated with high temperatures and with the wrong products.

Washing wool by hand is the most appropriate operation for this fiber; in fact, although modern washing machines have special programs for wool and delicates, in practice it is almost impossible to keep the fibers intact with the typical movements of the washing machine drum. For this reason, hand washing is the recommended procedure, if the size of the wool products allows it.

Should it prove necessary to perform a machine wash, even if the program indicates a short spin and limited revolutions, it is advisable to finish the cycle before it starts or, if it is a wool blanket, to proceed with a short and controlled spin.

Even in this case, it is essential to spread the garments flat, placing them horizontally on a towel that can absorb excess water, on the drying rack and in a ventilated room. During the summer, if you want to hang the woolen garments outside, absolutely avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

How to wash linen in the washing machine

Il linen it is a natural fiber, used to produce quality yarns, highly breathable and resistant to time and use. To date, linen for clothing is used a little less than in the past, and considered a fine yarn.

Among the qualities of linen are the very high resistance to heat and the excellent yield to dyes and other treatments, the aesthetic beauty and the high transpiring power. The biggest flaw is that it creates a lot of creases quite easily, which makes it a bit uncomfortable especially for those who have to sit several times during the day and do not have the possibility to change.

To wash linen effectively and without damaging it, it is possible to wash it both by hand and in the washing machine. When preparing to clean the linen fabric, the main problem concerns the colors and stains, which can be pre-treated separately: for example, for grease or oil stains it is possible to apply a little talcum powder, with miraculous effects.

Again, before you understand like washing linen in the washing machine it is advisable to read the label carefully and check if the linen garment should be washed separately from the others.

If this is not the case and the garments are not very dirty or stained, the program to be set will not exceed 40 degrees; even if linen resists much higher temperatures, it is not necessary to overdo it with hot water.

Pouring a little bicarbonate together with the ecological detergent, preferably liquid, the results will be excellent; furthermore, to avoid deforming linen fabrics, it is advisable to exclude the spin cycle and hang the garments directly in the sun, if possible.

This precaution must be observed both for the machine wash both in the case of hand washing, with warm / hot water, a tear of neutral detergent and bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate, among its many properties, increases the cleaning power of detergents, both by hand and in the washing machine.

How to wash jute in the washing machine

La jute it is a highly ecological natural fiber and has many characteristics in common with hemp. Unlike the latter, however, jute tends to fray more easily; for this reason, to wash clothes made with this yarn without damaging them, it is necessary to avoid high temperatures, as well as machine wash.

If the type of garment and the size allow it, it is recommended to wash by hand only, preferably with cold water, or at most slightly lukewarm, using a very delicate ecological detergent that does not produce foam.

Before understanding how to wash jute in the washing machine, in the event that there are stains on the fabric, it is advisable to proceed with a preliminary treatment, using a sponge dampened in water and a little vinegar.

Washing jute in the washing machine requires several precautions: the garments should be placed in the basket inside a mesh bag to preserve the garments; the selected program must be short, without spinning and with cold water.

The best way to hang garments made of jute is the same as for wool, in a horizontal position on top of a towel, in airy and dry environments.

How to wash viscose in the washing machine

La viscose in the past it was called artificial silk, or even vegetable silk, due to its silky and airy texture. Its fabric is produced by extracting the fiber from cellulosethrough industrial processes of a chemical nature.

To date, there are different types of viscose, based on the raw materials used for its production; the main distinction must be made between cellulosic and protein viscose. Both have in common the typical characteristics of viscose; fabrics made with this material are light, highly breathable, dry in a short time and, above all, hardly produce creases, lending themselves very well to the production of "no-iron" garments, which save time and effort.

Viscose garments are pleasant to wear, and give a sense of well-being, freshness and lightness. Often the viscose yarn is associated with other materials, which allow to obtain adequately elastic garments, able to guarantee excellent wearability and ensure maximum comfort.

Before understanding like washing viscose in the washing machine, it is good to know that viscose garments can be safely washed both by hand and in the washing machine. The golden rule of observing the label also applies to viscose, as it is the most effective way to check if the garments require separate washing or special treatments.

For the machine wash it is advisable to choose a program for delicate garments, preferably not higher than 30 degrees, add a little delicate liquid detergent, a teaspoon of bicarbonate and start the cycle, avoiding spinning until the end: the ideal would be to slightly squeeze the clothing, to avoid deformation during drying.

How to wash synthetic fabrics in the washing machine

Among the synthetic fabrics, nylon is the best known and considered to be the most resistant and versatile. The nylon fabric is obtained from synthetic processes of polyamide materials, which undergo treatments consisting of different stages of polymerization. We will talk about like washing nylon in the washing machine, but the same precautions also apply to other synthetics.

As for washing nylon garments, it can be done either by hand or in the washing machine, because this fiber is not sensitive to spinning or hot water (except for tights) and, therefore, no special precautions are necessary. , if not the preliminary reading of the label, which will indicate the need for any separate washing or specific treatments, such as not drying in the dryer.

Normally, nylon garments show excellent color retention; therefore, it is possible to proceed with a mixed washing in the washing machine, with a program for synthetic garments and which therefore does not exceed 30 or 40 degrees.

The centrifuge must be delicate and, in any case, not exceeding 800 rpm; if you wash the tights in the washing machine, it is advisable to first put them inside a netting bag, which will prevent the threads from breaking and damaging the fibers.

For a correct machine wash it is advisable to use a delicate liquid detergent, preferably ecological; although nylon is famous for its resistance, the mixture with elastane and other fibers that increase its elasticity could make the garments more sensitive to the action of washing powder.

Microfibres, microplastics, and machine washes

A problem perhaps underestimated, but that has gripped our planet for a few decades is certainly the pollution from microfibers (including microplastics). These small (micro) elements are released into the sewers from the wastewater of our homes, precisely because of the numerous machine washes.

700 thousand microplastics for a washing machine

The microfibers dispersed by natural fabrics during the machine wash they are of organic origin, consequently they tend to decompose as they are biodegradable. They are therefore less harmful than the microfibers of synthetic fabrics, also called microplastics.

Microplastic pollution is recently discovered, but all studies agree that it has become a serious problem for the entire human civilization. For more information on this topic we recommend reading our article From Pisces to Humans, the invasion of Microplastics.
