What Bluesign?

Bluesign® is a certification system that provides environmental solutions for fashion industries and brands. The goal is to develop a strategic plan to make production more sustainable, on a small or large scale. On the basis of rigorous criteria, tools and services are studied to support companies on their path towards sustainable development.

Bluesign® was born in 1997, in Switzerland, where a joint effort was made to develop a textile product with the lowest possible environmental impact, offering greater safety to workers and consumers.

In order to make this project accessible to as many companies as possible, an independent company was born from Switzerland: Bluesign. The main objective is to motivate suppliers, manufacturers and fashion brands to reduce the environmental footprint of fabrics, with particular attention to the chemicals used.

As an independent entity, Bluesign® monitors the progress made by companies in this process, ensures the accountsnuo development of solutions by optimizing their criteria year after year.

Certification Bluesign® guarantees a unique approach to minimize the environmental impact during the production process, an approach called Input Stream Management: the substances and raw materials applied are verified before their use in a production chain.

In practice, instead of testing the finished products, the system Bluesign® is applied before production. This means that suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, fashion brands must undergo rigorous tests to verify compliance with the criteria Bluesign®.

This innovative system reduces the environmental impact on the entire textile supply chain, in fact, with his approach, theInput Stream Management provides an efficient solution for fabric manufacturers and fashion brands, first of all evaluating the chemicals used in the various processing stages.

Certification Bluesign

The Blue Way of Bluesign represents the vision and mentality of responsible and sustainable production aimed at the textile sector. Bluesign is a complex certification system that provides more sustainable and safer environments for people, workers in the sector and end consumers.

We can therefore define a certified fashion product Bluesign like ecological, but also socially ethical.

As we know fashion and pollution are closely linked to each other and, driven by a holistic approach, Bluesign traces a path along the entire production chain, making improvements in every single production phase:

  • Productivity of the resources used
  • Consumer safety
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Consumption of water / energy
  • Control of emissions into the air

Bluesign drastically reduces the environmental impact of fabrics. As a solution provider, Bluesign operates as an independent inspector to ensure maximum trust and transparency. In line with this approach, Bluesign encourages the textile industry to increase its efforts in sustainable processes, step by step.

THEenvironmental pollution caused by the textile industry is there for all to see. Water pollution, dirty air, contaminated soils - the burden of environmental pollution, as a result of human action, has become increasingly clear.

Years before the European Regulation called REACH, Bluesign laid the groundwork for more careful chemical management, writing the world's longest list of hazardous chemicals: Restricted Substances List (RSL) - List of restricted substances - a list which regulates the use of over 900 chemicals, and renders about 600 toxic substances useless.

They were identified and classified further 20.000 chemicals commonly used in the textile sector and with the introduction of the RSL, hundreds of tons of hazardous chemicals "could" be replaced with safe alternatives across global textile manufacturing.

THEtextile innovation, from year to year, it tends to develop nuothere are increasingly ecological chemicals. So the alternatives exist, you just need to inform yourself and replace the obsolete ones with those nuove. If so, the risks to people and the environment could be drastically reduced.

It's a pity that Bluesign is a voluntary, and not mandatory, certification. As is joining the program Detox My Fashion, a campaign launched by GreenPeace to reduce the use of these toxic substances at the top levels of fashion, involving big brands, and large distribution chains of Fast Fashion.

Certification Requirements Bluesign

According to the criteria dictated by Bluesign, textile companies and brands are required to act responsibly and sustainably towards people, the environment and the energy resources to be used. The rules contain all relevant information and ensure consistent transparency and traceability in all processing stages, starting clearly from the raw materials to be used.

Particular attention is paid to intermediate products, those created in the company or purchased from third parties, since only the products tested by Bluesign they can get the label Bluesign® APPROVED.

Each small accessory is the result of a complex production process, for this reason it is necessary to test raw materials and components such as dyes, or other auxiliary / support chemical materials. The system Bluesign also offers green solutions to the producers of these components (external suppliers).

All components that pass the tests are marked as Bluesign® APPROVED, that's why there are no missing links, neither among the materials, nor on the various stages of production. Everything must be under control.

To apply the logo label Bluesign® at least 90% of fabric and 30% of accessories must be approved Bluesign®. We can therefore say that a product with a label Bluesign® it was made by a company that is committed to more sustainable manufacturing.

The goal remains to achieve the 100% approved components Bluesign, which would guarantee the highest degree of safety for the final consumer.
