What Piñatex?

Piñatex is a vegan skin alternative to genuine leather of animal origin and is often called pineapple skin.

The pineapple industry produces around 40.000 tons of leaves every year, and being considered a waste material they are usually left to rot or burn.

Piñatex retrieve these leaves to make one leatherette cruelty free. Using around 480 leaves, equal to 16 pineapple plants, the company producing Ananas Anam is able to create 1 square meter of leatherette.

While it is neither biodegradable nor recyclable, let's consider Piñatex an ecological material, but above all socially responsible: within a few years he managed to create nuothere jobs and local welfare. Farmers get an additional income to separate the longer leaves from the shorter ones.

Piñatex comes from a waste product that does not require land, water, pesticides and fertilizers to grow, and avoids the use of toxic substances such as heavy metals during the processing of the material.

In the production phase there is no waste of material - what happens with animal skins due to the asymmetrical shapes - and the residual biomass from the process, being cleaned of chemicals, is used as fertilizer for local soils.

Piñatex it uses about 80% of organic material, while the remainder of the composition is of synthetic origin: the most common version is composed of 80% organic material and 20% of biodegradable polylactic acid, while the coating is in polyurethane.

Piñatex it is available in 5 versions, which differ in composition, texture, colors, and possible applications:

  1. Piñatex ORIGINAL
  2. Piñatex Pluma
  3. Piñatex MINERAL
  4. Piñatex METALLIC

How to wash Piñatex?

The environmental impact of laundry detergents and household cleaners is devastating to our planet, so we highly recommend using ecological detergents.

Piñatex it is an imitation leather and as such it requires a lot of attention during washing. Faux leathers are more delicate than leather of animal origin, so we recommend removing stains / encrustations with a smooth sponge soaked in a little water and a pinch of ecological detergent. If the stain persists, let it soak for 5/8 minutes.
