What Vegea?

Vegea is a vegan leather made using pomace: the residue of the vinification made up of grape skins and seeds. The name Vegea derives from the combination of VEG (Vegan) and GEA (Mother Earth), and is a substitute for skin of animal origin and leatherette synthetic.

This vegan leather, also called wine leather or wineleather, is produced in Italy by the Italian company Vegea Srl without the use of toxic solvents for the environment or human health.

Vegea uses a high content of organic material, while the rest of the composition is of synthetic origin: 90% organic material + 10% polyurethane. While the support fabric can vary according to customer requests.

It is a good model of circular fashion and it represents one of the solutions to one of the biggest problems we face: the unsustainable linear model. However, keeping in mind that Vegea is not recyclable, and to define it biodegradable or compostable, the support fabric must first be evaluated (which can vary from polyurethane to organic cotton).

Vegea it is a material with characteristics similar to leather, both visually and technically. Like other materials of this type, in fact, it was created to simulate and replace leather of animal origin, entering by right into what we define cruelty free fashion.

We are happy to support the cruelty free plan pursued by Vegea, since the livestock industry is one of the main factors of environmental pollution, as well as very little ethics towards many living beings.

Vegea it is produced in different versions which differ in technical and aesthetic properties such as thickness, elasticity, weight, finishing, weaving, support fabric and bio-based content.

Reduce food waste with Vegea

The idea of minimizing waste in the food and fashion supply chains brings out ideas and innovations that can revolutionize the very concept of "cross fertilization".

Grape waste has therefore not remained unrelated to this "food-tex" revolution.

Vegea demonstrates our ability to give life to fibers capable of creating sustainable technical fabrics, avoiding to throw away about 13 million tons of marc: 100 kg of grapes yield: 80/85 kg of must, 1/2 kg of lees, 3/4 kg of stalks, 9/10 kg of skins and 3/4 kg of grape seeds, all elements that today are considered pomace and which are the solid residues of grape processing.

Only grape seeds contain about 35% of cellulose from which a fiber can be created.

The fibers obtained from the recovery of the marc can be used for the production of 100% cruelty free fabrics / materials of various kinds, such as and Vegea.

Several brands have already started to get to work: Le Coq Sportif and H&M are just a few examples. But also Bentley has already used Vegea to create the interiors of some of his cars.

To these we also add Diadora who will use in the “Mi Basket” footwear collection Vegea.

Therefore highly sustainable solutions that can give an important and fundamental impulse to many communities not far from us, reducing waste and enriching that now indispensable intertwining between different production sectors.

How to wash Vegea?

The environmental impact of laundry detergents and household cleaners is devastating to our planet, so we highly recommend using environmentally friendly detergents.

Vegea it is an imitation leather and as such it requires a lot of attention during washing. Faux leathers are more delicate than leather of animal origin, so we recommend removing stains / encrustations with a smooth sponge soaked in a little water and a pinch of ecological detergent. If the stain persists, let it soak for 5/8 minutes.
